US tourism slump to cost billions in 2025

The American economy faces billions in lost money as fewer foreigners visit and many people avoid buying US products. This adds to several problems, keeping recession risks high. Airplane arrivals of non-citizens fell almost 10 percent in March compared to last year. Goldman Sachs thinks these issues might cost the country about $90 billion in 2025. Foreign tourism helped the US economy after pandemic travel rules ended.

Many travelers are changing their plans because of border problems, world tensions, and economic uncertainty. Canadian videographer Curtis Allen canceled his US vacation after President Trump put new tariffs on Canada and made comments about it becoming the 51st state. Allen and his partner usually camp in Oregon, but will stay in British Columbia this year. He also stopped his Netflix account and checks carefully to avoid American products at stores. International visitors spent a record $254 billion in America last year.

Before 2025 began, experts predicted the US would welcome 77 million visitors this year, almost reaching the 2019 record. They thought the numbers would set new records in 2026. However, with fewer people choosing America as their destination, these expectations may need to change.
