Utalii raid unearths Nairobi gadget kingpin in MKOPA phone scandal

Police swooped on a Nairobi electronics repair shop and caught a suspect red-handed with dozens of stolen devices. Officers from Utalii Police Station raided the man's residence after getting tips from concerned citizens. The suspect ran his illegal operation right from his home workshop where he fixed electronics for unsuspecting customers. Police placed him in custody while they dig deeper into his criminal network. The raid happened during a major crackdown on electronic theft across the capital.

The haul was massive with cops seizing 72 mobile phones plus laptops and other gadgets. Officers also grabbed specialized equipment like Universal Flashing Interface devices and Pandora tools used to unlock stolen phones. M-KOPA Company already identified 32 of the recovered phones as items stolen from their customers. The remaining electronics sit in evidence storage while police track down the rightful owners. Investigators believe the suspect may have accomplices helping him fence the stolen goods.

The National Police Service praised citizens for stepping forward with crucial information that cracked the case. Community policing efforts are paying off as more people report suspicious activities in their neighborhoods. The arrest comes just one day after officers in Kirinyaga County nabbed nine suspects with looted property. Police are ramping up operations against electronics theft rings operating in informal settlements. The crackdown targets networks that steal devices then modify them for resale to unsuspecting buyers.
