Vodacom partners with Starlink to boost internet in 25 African countries

Vodacom Group has partnered with Starlink, the satellite internet service operated by Elon Musk's SpaceX, to provide high-speed connectivity to enterprise clients in 25 African nations. This collaboration will see Vodacom resell Starlink's satellite equipment and data plans, aiming to improve internet access for businesses in regions with underdeveloped terrestrial infrastructure. The service is intended to support commercial activities like e-commerce and remote work with faster, more reliable speeds.

South Africa is currently excluded from this initiative. The exclusion stems from Starlink not having secured a required operating license from the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa. The regulatory body mandates that foreign companies must have a minimum 30 percent ownership by historically disadvantaged groups, a condition Starlink has not yet met.

The partnership is viewed as a significant step toward Africa's broader digital inclusion goals, offering an alternative where laying fiber optic cables is impractical or too expensive. Vodacom's extensive local presence is expected to provide crucial installation and customer support for the new service.
