Vice President Constantino Chiwenga said religious institutions remain essential partners in Zimbabwe's development through contributions to education, healthcare, agriculture and infrastructure at St Luke's Mission Hospital anniversary celebrations on Saturday. The Catholic facility in Lupane marked 75 years of medical service to Matabeleland North Province with 250 beds serving patients from five districts.
Chiwenga pledged government support to upgrade solar systems, repair mortuary facilities and expand student housing at the mission hospital. The vice president commissioned new infrastructure additions that include an operating theater, outpatient department, nursing school lecture block and shelter for 150 expectant mothers. Archbishop Alex Thomas led reconstruction efforts after fire destroyed the Family and Child Health block in 2019.
The government official warned young people about drug abuse and threatened legal action against dealers. Chiwenga emphasized that rural health facilities support industrialization plans and invited faith organizations to participate in climate-smart agriculture programs aligned with Vision 2030 economic goals.
