VP Chiwenga Returns to Mount St Marys for Thanksgiving Mass

VP Chiwenga returned to Mount St Mary's Mission School feeling deeply moved. He attended a church service, thanking God for Father Cellestino Magwenzi's becoming a Catholic priest. The Vice President studied at this exact school before quitting in 1973 to battle for his country's freedom. Magwenzi followed the same school path years later as Chiwenga had.

Four friends from Form Three class made history together at this school. Besides Chiwenga, the group included Air Chief Marshal Shiri, who died recently, retired Brigadier General Richard Huchu, and Enerts Mandizvidza. These boys decided during a simple tea break they should leave school behind. They chose dangerous freedom fighting instead of comfortable classroom learning because they wanted Zimbabwe free from foreign control.

These teenagers put their lives on the line when they joined the war effort. Their burning desire for an independent homeland pushed them forward despite enormous dangers. Three survived - Chiwenga, Shiri, and Huchu - who later became government leaders after independence succeeded. Most people believe Mandizvidza died somewhere during the fighting years. Nobody shared exact details about his final moments.

Today's special Mass celebrates Father Magwenzi's religious journey but carries a deeper meaning. The ceremony reminds everyone about the huge sacrifices earlier students made for Zimbabwe. VP Chiwenga represents living history among the crowd today. His presence connects past struggles with present celebrations as everyone remembers both survivors and those lost during hard battles for freedom. The full circle moment brought tears as yesterday's freedom fighter honored today's spiritual warrior.
