A disability rights group in Malawi wants the government to fix how hospitals treat girls who cannot hear or speak when they need reproductive health services. Nurse Lucretia Kuchande from the Human Rights for Women and Girls with Disabilities organization told people at a workshop in Lilongwe that young patients struggle to explain medical problems because facilities lack staff trained in sign language. She pushed for either dedicated interpreters at clinics or mandatory sign language training during medical school.
National coordinator Stella Konya said parents need to step up by teaching their disabled kids to advocate for themselves instead of waiting for the government to solve everything alone. The group hosted the event to address how girls with disabilities keep getting blocked from basic healthcare access.
