Water ministers plan tech shift to end high bills and salt

Tanzania's Water Ministers from the mainland and Zanzibar just agreed to boost teamwork on managing water resources across the country. Jumaa Aweso from the mainland and Nadir Abdullatif Al-Wardy from Zanzibar hammered out the deal during talks in Dar es Salaam, where they committed to bringing in fresh tech for water management and better coordination.

The joint meeting pulled together water sector bosses from both sides after they checked out various water projects around the region. Aweso said at the session that this brand-new cooperation will stick around long-term.

He pushed hard for embracing change in the sector through smart tech use to create real transformation in how water gets managed. The minister said everyone needs to accept change and deploy technology to shake up the water sector, pointing to prepaid meters as an example; they already started rolling out to kill off bloated bills and force people to use water more responsibly.

Aweso explained that prepaid water meter installations are already underway, and they are bringing in desalination tech after finding tons of spots dealing with super salty groundwater that makes regular sources unusable.
