What a monosynth loses when you stack it into chords

Two of the six instruments sampled for Oracle were never monophonic keyboard synths, and one of them has no keyboard at all. The Moog DFAM is a semi-modular percussion box. No MIDI socket, no keys, just an eight-step analog sequencer with a pitch row and a velocity row, plus a patchbay of 24 mini-jack points.

The Moog Sonic Six is the other outlier. It arrived in 1972, stayed in production until 1979, and it was duophonic rather than mono, with one oscillator taking the highest note you held and the other taking the lowest. Two LFOs. A control panel that folded over the keys so the thing traveled like a briefcase, and the only built-in speaker Moog ever fitted to a synth.

So the shorthand on the box is doing some work. Fold six instruments like that into one polyphonic plugin and parts of them survive the trip intact, while other parts quietly do not.

The waveform travels, and the circuit stays behind​

Teletone sampled waveforms, along with modulated tones captured from the same machines. That is the part that made the journey. The oscillator sound is real, recorded off real hardware, and it does not drift out of tune or need recapping.

What did not make the journey is everything downstream of the oscillator. When you sweep the filter in Teletone's poly reworking of these mono circuits, you are hearing a digital filter shaping a Moog recording, not a transistor ladder reacting to a knob. Same input, different circuit doing the work.

That gap is easiest to hear on the DFAM, whose ladder filter switches between low-pass and high-pass. A switch is a wiring decision, not a timbre, so it cannot be baked into a sample the way a waveform can. You get the sound that circuit produced on the day, not the circuit.

Which is a trade, not a failure. You also get 300 presets, six drag-and-drop LFOs, an arpeggiator, and total recall of a patch six months later, none of which any of these six machines offered.

Note priority disappears once every key gets a voice​

Hold three notes on a Sonic Six and the instrument makes a decision for you. One oscillator follows the top note, the other follows the bottom, and the note in the middle is simply not there. That is a real limitation with a real sound attached to it.

Now give every key its own voice and its own signal path, which is what a Kontakt instrument does by default. Nothing gets dropped. Nothing competes. The result is fuller and cleaner, and it is also a different instrument from the one that was sampled.

Glide changes character in the same way. On a synth built around a single voice sounding at a time, portamento is one pitch sliding from the note you released to the note you pressed, because there is only ever one thing to move. Oracle has its own Glide control, but with several voices running, each one slides independently. You get a handful of separate slides instead of a single continuous line, which is a lovely effect and not the effect the hardware made.

Mono-voiced waveforms fight each other in chords​

Here is the practical failure mode nobody mentions in the demo videos. A Model D bass waveform was voiced to be the only thing happening below 200Hz. It carries weight down there because on the original instrument there was no second voice to share the space with.

Stack four of those in a chord and you have four copies of that weight, phase-adding in the same octave. The patch that sounded enormous on a single note turns into mud. Not the library's fault. You asked a bass sound to do a job it was never shaped for.

Three fixes, all boring, all effective. Roll off the low end on the plugin's filter section before you reach for a corrective EQ later. Voice the chord higher, from roughly the octave above middle C, where these waveforms have room to sit side by side. Or set the patch to one voice and play the bass line the way the machine was designed to be played, then layer a separate pad underneath it for the harmony.

The reverse problem shows up with the DFAM material. Those samples came from a percussion instrument with a hard, fast envelope, so they behave more like pitched drums than sustained notes. Held as a chord, they thin out fast, and no amount of filter movement fixes an envelope that was short before it was ever recorded. Use them for stabs, plucks, and rhythmic parts, which is roughly what the hardware was doing anyway.
