Whip up quick tasty pizza at home with simple tips

Making pizza at home doesn't take much time or effort, especially when you prepare everything ahead. I've spent years figuring out exactly how to make the perfect pizza every single time - crispy, cheesy, and absolutely delicious. Let me share my method with you.

Start by heating your oven as hot as it goes, usually between 475°F and 550°F. Professional pizza places use ovens that reach 1,000°F, and we want to come as close as possible to that temperature. Give your oven a full half hour to heat completely. If you have a pizza stone, put it in during this heating period.

Keep a kitchen towel nearby just in case your smoke alarm starts beeping from cheese or toppings that might spill. For the dough, you'll need about 12 to 16 ounces - either homemade or from the store. The secret lies in how you work with it.

Instead of using flour, which can make your crust tough, put a little olive oil on your counter. Press from the middle and gently stretch outward, leaving the edges slightly thicker for a nice crust. When using a rolling pin, remember to lift the edges afterward to create a defined crust shape.

Putting your dough on parchment paper before adding toppings makes it much easier to transfer to the oven. You might want to bake the plain dough for 1-2 minutes first - this helps ensure it cooks completely. Place it on your stone, baking sheet, or pizza pan until it puffs up slightly, then take it out and pop any bubbles before adding your toppings.

For truly amazing cheese coverage, mix both shredded and sliced mozzarella. Pre-shredded works fine, but freshly shredded melts more evenly. A little parmesan sprinkled on top really brings out all the flavors. When it comes to toppings, you can pick whatever you like!

Some popular combinations include basic cheese pizza with mozzarella, fontina, parmesan, and gorgonzola; pepperoni pizza with regular or cup-style pepperoni; supreme pizza loaded with pepperoni, mushrooms, peppers, onions, and olives; meat lovers' pizza packed with sausage, bacon, ham, and salami.

Other favorites include Margherita with fresh mozzarella, basil, and tomatoes; BBQ chicken with barbecue sauce, chicken, red onion, and bacon; or buffalo chicken made with hot sauce, chicken, garlic, and blue cheese. Bake your creation for 8-12 minutes, depending on how hot your oven runs and how thick your crust is.

You'll know it's ready when the cheese bubbles and browns slightly and the bottom turns golden. Try not to open the oven door much, as this lets heat escape. Pizza stones really help create better pizzas because they turn your regular oven into something closer to a brick oven by spreading heat evenly.

They also pull moisture away from the crust, preventing sogginess. No stone? Flip a baking sheet upside down, or use a perforated pizza pan instead.
