Tourism Secretary Rebecca Miano plans to visit Nairobi National Park today, March 1. The Kenya Wildlife Service said she will arrive in the afternoon.
The visit comes after fires broke out in many national parks across Kenya. Secretary Miano wants to see the burnt areas herself and hear from KWS leaders about what happened. She also hopes to thank the firefighters who worked hard to stop the flames.
KWS will tell reporters what they learn during this visit. Just yesterday, two fires started in different parts of Nairobi National Park. One fire near Wilson Airport was put out fast thanks to KWS staff working with Nairobi County workers.
Another fire began at 4 p.m. near Athi Basin Dam. Many groups, including KWS, Kenya Defense Forces, volunteers, and fire trucks with water tanks, helped fight this fire.
The dry season has caused fires in several parks throughout Kenya. KWS has brought in helicopters to help put out flames. They also work with nearby towns, county governments, and other helpers to stop fires faster. Workers have made gaps between trees and plants to keep future fires from spreading.
KWS asks people to call 0800 597 000 or send WhatsApp messages to 0726661509 if they see fire dangers. They thanked all the groups that helped stop the fires, including Kenya Defense Forces, forest rangers, volunteers, county workers, and local people.
On February 26, Kenya Wildlife Service and Kenya Forest Service sent dozens of workers to fight fires at Aberdare and Mt Kenya Forests. Officials said these fires started on their own and spread quickly. Lucy Mwati from KWS Mountain Conservation Area said teams are still fighting an active fire in the Embaringo part of Aberdare Forest.
