Wildfire on Franschhoek hill refuses to back down

A brutal wildfire is tearing through the mountains above Franschhoek, jumping rivers and threatening farms. Strong winds pushed the flames from the Assegaai-bos area across the Berg River overnight. The blaze is advancing toward places like Holiday Farm La Bri, with firefighters struggling against steep, rugged terrain.

Crews from Cape Winelands Fire Services and CapeNature worked through the night. Spokesperson Jo-Anne Otto described extremely challenging conditions as winds drove the fire. Aerial water bombers and ground teams are focused on creating firebreaks to protect properties.

Firefighter Henry Robbertse was noted for his efforts in the ongoing operation. The fire remains uncontained, challenging resources and personnel. The situation highlights the severe danger posed by summer wildfires in the Western Cape's winelands region.
