Windows 11 update bug makes shutdown restart your PC instead

Microsoft broke the off button because the latest patch forces computers to reboot immediately. The tech giant confirmed that the update KB5073455 messes with power states on Windows 11 version 23H2 rigs running Secure Launch. This glitch creates a loop where clicking shutdown just restarts the machine instead.

Laptops suffer the worst since sleep mode and hibernation are sketchy as well. A notebook might stay awake inside a bag, cooking itself while draining the battery. If the juice runs out and the system fails to hibernate, users risk losing unsaved progress during a hard crash.

People dealing with this mess can force a manual kill via the terminal to bypass the broken menu. Running that specific text line ensures the hardware actually powers down. While that trick helps temporarily, the band-aid fixes absolutely nothing regarding the busted sleep functions.

Redmond pushed out KB5077797 to squash the bug and restore normal behavior. Anyone seeing their PC refuse to sleep or stay dead should grab that file immediately. Verifying that power transitions work correctly afterwards saves a massive headache.
