A woman aged 33 from Ingezi, Kadoma, caught with 6.2kg of marijuana, will spend two and a half years in jail. This happens as officials crack down on people moving illegal drugs between South Africa and Zimbabwe.
Sphelile Kufa admitted she was guilty when she faced Beitbridge resident magistrate Takudzwa Gwazemba on Tuesday. The government took the drugs, worth $626 US dollars, as part of her punishment.
Prosecutor Tinayeishe Matenga explained that police detectives learned about Kufa through a tip on March 3. Someone told them she had brought marijuana into Zimbabwe illegally. The officers found her at the Masvingo turn-off, looking for a ride to Kadoma.
Police searched her bags and discovered three wrapped packets of marijuana, then arrested her. At the same time, officers are hunting for a South African truck driver who ran away Sunday after they found 163kg of marijuana he smuggled. Border officials have tightened security on cargo and travelers because marijuana smuggling from South Africa through Beitbridge Border Post has increased recently.
