Yankees suffer unprecedented sweep by Marlins on Gil's return

Luis Gil returned from the 60-day injured list Sunday as the New York Yankees sought pitching stability. The right-hander allowed five earned runs across 3.1 innings against Miami, contributing to a historic sweep by the Marlins. Gil walked four batters while surrendering five hits during his 77-pitch outing. His fastball reached a peak velocity of 98.5 mph, yet failed to prevent consistent hard contact from Miami hitters. The performance left Gil with a 13.50 earned run average for the season.

The Yankees face mounting rotation problems after avoiding trade deadline acquisitions. Management chose to rely on Gil alongside inexperienced options Will Warren and Cam Schlittler rather than pursuing veteran arms. Clarke Schmidt remains sidelined for the year while Gerrit Cole continues injury recovery. The franchise released Marcus Stroman despite his 193.2 innings of service. Gil has managed just ten starts since 2022 due to various health issues and command struggles.
