ZACC arrests ZIMRA officer, agents in Chirundu smuggling

Somebody declared 30 tons of clothing as 50 drums of honey, all 22,000 kilograms of it, and that fiction is why three men are answering to ZACC. Emmanuel Munyaradzi Charimari, a ZIMRA revenue officer posted at the Chirundu One Stop Border Post, picked up a criminal abuse of duty charge.

Clearing agents Basil Tawanda Gayihayi and Takudzwa Hamilton Nyikadzino are staring at fraud counts. Gayihayi allegedly cooked up the phony transit file after the cargo cleared the Zambian side, listing South Africa as the destination, then handed Nyikadzino the job of walking it past border staff.

Charimari was manning the southbound gate, and investigators reckon he let the truck roll through with no documents collected, no ASYCUDA lookup whatsoever, and no entry in any register. That's 140 bales out of Tanzania, duty-free by accident on purpose.

Officers eventually caught the load in Chitungwiza. All three got nabbed at the border, faced the Kariba Magistrates' Court, and walked out on US$200 bail apiece. A fourth name, Ishmael Gezani, is reportedly still unaccounted for.
