ZANU-PF moves to extend Mnangagwa's rule to 2030 in Mutare

Zimbabwe's governing ZANU-PF party approved a resolution on Sunday to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa's tenure by two years beyond his constitutional limit. Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi announced that the 83-year-old leader could remain in office until 2030 if legislative amendments pass through parliament. The constitution restricts presidents to two five-year terms, but ZANU-PF holds a parliamentary majority that could advance the measure.

Vice President Constantino Chiwenga and his supporters reportedly oppose the extension plan. Legal expert Lovemore Madhuku warned that altering term limits may require two national referendums. Mnangagwa previously pledged to respect constitutional term limits, but loyalists have lobbied for his continued leadership. Liberation war veteran Blessed Geza criticized the proposal through online broadcasts, but demonstrations have been limited.
