Zanzibar authorities have emphasized expanding investment in digital data infrastructure to strengthen evidence-driven governance during commemorations marking Africa Statistics Day. Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning Hamad Omar Bakari told attendees at Idriss Abdulwakil Hall that modernizing statistical systems remains essential for tracking sustainable development objectives and addressing continental challenges including food insecurity affecting one in five Africans.
Bakari commended judicial, prosecutorial and law enforcement agencies for implementing electronic record management platforms that facilitate administrative data analysis. He referenced successful continental initiatives such as Ghana's computer-assisted telephone surveys and Uganda's modernized administrative databases as models worth replicating.
Chief Government Statistician Salum Kassim Ali noted that implementing development frameworks including the UN 2030 Agenda, AU Agenda 2063 and Zanzibar Development Vision 2050, requires high-quality, timely information. He thanked citizens for peaceful participation in recent general elections while acknowledging household and institutional contributions to official statistics production.
