Tanzania's national parks authority just teamed up with a Zanzibar tourism group to keep visitors hanging around the mainland longer instead of bouncing straight back to the islands. TANAPA and ZATI signed this deal in Zanzibar with help from the tourism ministry's permanent secretary, Dr Aboud Jumbe, and they're basically trying to funnel more beach tourists into wildlife parks. The conservation commissioner, John Nyamhanga, says the whole point is getting people to spend extra days checking out the 21 national parks, which should pump up revenue and create jobs.
ZATI's chairman, Suleiman Ali Mohamed, is all about pulling in more investment and marketing in both spots internationally. Meanwhile, TANAPA has already set up an office in Zanzibar to make this partnership happen, and Dr Halima Kiwango is running that operation to keep everyone connected.
