Zimbabwe plans to harness artificial intelligence and emerging technologies as catalysts for economic advancement, ICT Minister Tatenda Mavetera declared at the UNDP AI and Innovation Week launch in Harare. She emphasized that machine learning applications will accelerate national development targets while transforming service delivery across mining, agriculture, healthcare and manufacturing industries.

Mavetera revealed a five-point National AI Strategy spanning 2026 through 2030, encompassing government modernization, workforce preparation, industrial competitiveness, ethical frameworks and research infrastructure. The blueprint prioritizes digital identity platforms, encrypted data systems and cybersecurity safeguards.

The weeklong event offers exhibitions, competitive coding challenges and recognition ceremonies, distributing $40,000 in awards. Mine Tech and Lithium Hackathon champions will claim $20,000 in combined prizes, with $10,000 earmarked for top performers. Mavetera challenged ministries, businesses, universities and young innovators to unite behind AI integration efforts, praising youth as the nation's most valuable resource for technological transformation.
