Zim judge ordered to English class, fails trial

A Zimbabwe magistrate has been removed from criminal cases after a High Court ruling found her English-language skills to be too poor to conduct fair trials. Judges Esther Muremba and Tawanda Chitapi overturned the convictions of three men after finding the magistrate's written judgment incoherent and grammatically flawed.

The court questioned whether defendants could comprehend verdicts delivered in such disjointed language. Muremba noted the magistrate's sentences were often unintelligible, making it nearly impossible for interpreters to convey accurate meanings to the accused. The ruling described her work as structurally unsound and lacking analytical depth.

The High Court ordered the magistrate to complete mandatory retraining with a specific focus on English proficiency before returning to criminal proceedings. The judges emphasized that judicial competence forms the foundation of credible justice systems. Raphael Tandi, Ravious Zata and Dellon Tizora were freed after their theft convictions were set aside.
