Zim sends seven to World Cross Country Champs

The world cross country championships are happening in a random Florida park this year. For the first time since the early nineties, the global event returns to the United States. Over five hundred athletes from sixty countries will tackle the redesigned course at Apalachee Regional Park. It marks a major international sports moment on American soil.

Zimbabwe sends a squad of seven runners. National champions Godwin Katakura and Caroline Mhandu lead the group. They aim for record finishes against elite competition. The senior men's race includes Wayne Kabondo and US-based Bradley Makuvire. Answer Tasara joins Mhandu in the women's event. Two junior athletes round out the team.

Their athletics association president voiced cautious optimism. He said the role is to set the stage for athletes to perform, hoping success attracts managers and sponsors. Selection was based purely on winning the national trials. The message to the team was simple: go prove you belong there.

Preparations involved personal coaches and club training. A recent race in Botswana served as a benchmark. Mhandu placed fifth there, a result officials called decent but not dominant. The real test is leaving a mark later this season. The underlying hope is that this platform launches careers, not just finishes them.
