Zimbabwe army bars opposition supporters from service

A senior Zimbabwe National Army officer confirmed that military recruitment favors families that support the ruling ZANU-PF party, while excluding those who support the opposition. Major General Walter Tapfumaneyi made the statement on Traditional Leaders' Day in Masvingo Province, explaining that background checks assess political loyalties before enlistment. He compared opposition supporters to unreliable hunting dogs that might betray their owners.

Tapfumaneyi previously headed the Central Intelligence Organisation as deputy director-general and led Forever Associates Zimbabwe in the 2023 elections. Opposition groups accused that organization of electoral interference. Provincial Minister Ezra Chadzamira praised Tapfumaneyi's role in securing Zanu-PF's election victory and highlighted army community projects.

The general's remarks intensified concerns about military politicization in Zimbabwe. Critics argue such practices violate constitutional neutrality requirements, but officials defended the policy as protecting government interests.
