Zimbabwe Artists Score Free Legal Muscle

Zimbabwe artists will soon receive free legal help thanks to a new deal between the National Arts Council and DNM Attorneys. The two groups signed an agreement yesterday at the council headquarters to protect creative works from theft and misuse.

NACZ director Napoleon Nyanhi called artists "the lifeblood of our culture and economy," but noted many face exploitation without legal support. The partnership aims to stop piracy and unfair contracts that rob creators of their earnings. Attorneys will offer no-cost representation on all intellectual property matters and teach artists about copyright laws and contracts.

The protection of creative works helps preserve Zimbabwean culture across music, stories, films, books, and visual art, Nyanhi explained. A stronger legal framework also attracts more investment into the arts sector. He urged all artists to register their works and seek legal advice before signing any agreements.

Moses Nkomo from DNM Attorneys said his firm wants to transform the arts into a major economic contributor through capacity building and legal backup. The lawyers plan to educate creators about how laws can protect them and encourage artists to push for better legal protections. They stressed that intellectual property rights belong to the creators themselves.

The partnership marks a turning point for Zimbabwean artists who previously lacked access to legal resources. Both organizations hope this collaboration will lead to a thriving creative industry where artists can earn fair money from their talents. The agreement focuses on long-term growth through education and direct support.
