Zimbabwe cracks down on 1,923 fake goods sellers

The Consumer Protection Commission has prosecuted 1,923 businesses this year for various offenses, including selling expired and counterfeit goods. Commissioner Respina Zinyanduko stated that nationwide enforcement blitzes, conducted with other government agencies, have led to the seizure and destruction of fraudulent products like fake electronics, illicit beverages, and smuggled food items.

Zinyanduko emphasized the commission's commitment to intensifying consumer awareness campaigns and strengthening legal frameworks for harsher sentencing. She noted that consumer protection is now a formal pillar of the upcoming National Development Strategy 2, aligning with the nation's Vision 2030 economic goals. The conference aims to develop actionable strategies to eliminate counterfeit products and ensure marketplace integrity.
