Bulawayo City Council checked over 800 businesses last month for health problems. Inspectors found many shops selling bad food or running without proper permits. About 25 stores received notices for having expired products that could make people sick. Health director Dr Edwin Mzingwane said they discovered unsafe meat, damaged canned goods expired items during these checks.
Several shops in Entumbane had problems with tinned beans and fish that inspectors condemned. Businesses in Mpopoma faced similar issues with their products. Two major meat sellers lost 622 kilograms of meat deemed unfit to eat. Even the popular fast food chain Simbisa Brands had beef patties, bacon, yogurt, and other items taken off shelves.
The council also fined 19 businesses for operating without licenses. These included gas stations, sports bars, butcheries, and restaurants in different neighborhoods. Dr Mzingwane stated that they have stepped up enforcement because selling food without proper permits creates serious health risks. The city employs health officers who regularly inspect all kinds of establishments to protect public health.
