Zimbabwe's government has approved sweeping reductions to energy sector licensing costs following cabinet deliberations, with officials anticipating the changes will lower consumer prices while stimulating private investment. Information Minister Jenfan Muswere confirmed that fees for solar generation permits have been eliminated, while petroleum import licenses dropped from 30,000 to 15,000 dollars.
Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube said regulatory expenses contribute significantly to final product costs and the reductions should translate into cheaper energy for households and businesses. Rural fuel retail permits fell to 150 dollars while liquefied petroleum gas licensing costs were cut in half to encourage cleaner cooking alternatives and expand service coverage outside urban centers.
The Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority will implement the revised fee structure after completing legislative amendments, with the updated schedule to appear in official government publications.
