Zimbabwe police target repeat traffic offenders with driving bans

Zimbabwe's traffic cameras are catching drivers who break several road rules, and repeat offenders risk losing their licenses. The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) says some motorists could face court cases or be banned from driving as its new Electronic Traffic Management System gets to work.

Harare already has 20 camera sites up and running. And these things can flag more than one violation by the same driver, which means several fines could land on a single motorist.

Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the national police spokesperson, gave the media a look at the setup in Harare. Journalists got to see real footage of bad driving in the city center, with some drivers caught breaking several rules.

Among the acts the cameras can spot are unsafe passing near traffic signals, unbuckled seat belts, and vehicles stopping to collect or leave passengers at spots where that is not allowed. Those caught must also respond to digital notices within the set deadlines.

Pedestrians aren't getting a free pass, either. Jaywalking can get them in trouble, while bikers who ride in unsafe ways could face action as well. The rules apply to all road users.

Nyathi made one point clear. Police want safer streets and better driving habits, not a system built just to dish out fines. Reckless acts put other people at risk, and the aim is to cut that risk.

There's a crime-fighting angle as well. Camera feeds may help police spot cars linked to armed heists, thefts from vehicles, and other suspect activity. Tracking car details could give officers useful leads when they look into such cases.

Another benefit, at least in theory, is less face-to-face contact between drivers and traffic cops. That could make it harder for anyone to seek bribes, demand cash, or tamper with how road rules are enforced.

Still, human officers aren't going anywhere. Police will keep patrolling streets and responding to crime, while the camera network gives them more data to work with.
