A Zimbabwean official has reaffirmed the country's commitment to refugee protection during an international forum. Deputy Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Mercy Dinha outlined progress on past pledges at a Global Refugee Forum meeting in Geneva.
Dinha stated Zimbabwe's approach prioritizes refugee self-reliance and long-term solutions. She highlighted the allocation of irrigable land to hundreds of farmers at Tongogara Refugee Camp to improve food security. The country has also expanded access to documentation like passports and extended ID validity.
The deputy minister noted ongoing reforms to national refugee law, aiming to improve integration and work rights. She acknowledged that nearly fourteen thousand refugees and asylum seekers are currently hosted, calling for sustained international donor funding to match government efforts. Dinha also thanked the outgoing UN refugee chief for his support.
