Zimbabwe's phone watchdog group, POTRAZ, wants the government to require people to register their phones with their SIM cards. They believe this will make online activities safer and fight internet crimes.
POTRAZ's tech expert Hasha Myambo says linking phones to the current SIM card list would boost security for online payments and help people trust digital services again. He also points out that we need better rules to tackle bad behavior online.
Right now, companies must keep records of all SIM cards they give out. POTRAZ hopes for a new rule creating a main phone database where all service providers share information. This system would let them shut down stolen or missing devices across every network soon after someone reports a problem.
The agency talks with other digital groups, especially other regulators, to create plans that use technology to boost the economy and help society. This phone registration push shows POTRAZ moving away from strict top-down control toward working together with others, which they hope creates a stronger digital marketplace.
