George Charamba, who works as Deputy Chief Secretary for Presidential Communications, made these threats after The NewsHawks posted Geza's statement on X. He claimed anyone publishing such content must be part of an "insurgency." He warned that the government might take severe action against media professionals who spread these messages.
Geza had asked Zimbabweans to stay home during a national shutdown meant to pressure President Emmerson Mnangagwa to resign. He cautioned people about possible violence, mentioning some officials have armed bodyguards or hired gunmen. He warned civilians might end up caught between gunfire if they ventured outside during protests.
Charamba has made similar threats before. Last year, he warned reporters they could face punishment for covering corruption claims against ruling party allies shown in Al Jazeera's "Gold Mafia" documentary. He hinted journalists might face the same fate as opposition lawmaker Job Sikhala, who spent almost two years locked up without trial.
