Zimbabwe teams up with Belarus for UN Council bid

Zimbabwe finished cooperation talks with Belarus yesterday, and the European nation backed Zimbabwe's attempt to gain a UN Security Council seat for 2027-2028. Foreign ministers from both countries led the Mid-Term Review meeting in Harare, with Belarus Deputy Prime Minister Viktor Karenkevich attending as a guest of honor. Zimbabwe has already received support from Russia, India, Cuba, and southern African nations for its UN bid.

The countries reviewed their progress across many areas, including agriculture, industry, education, health, and mining. They also formed an agriculture working group to strengthen their farming partnership. Zimbabwe thanked Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko for sending aid after President Mnangagwa requested help during the recent drought crisis. Both sides agreed to speed up unfinished agreements and celebrated their new tax treaty.

The nations want easier travel between them and plan to remove visa requirements for officials with diplomatic passports. Belarus will host the next full cooperation meeting in 2026. Zimbabwe Foreign Minister Amon Murwira called the review successful and stressed they must turn promises into results. The Belarusian minister noted that the close friendship between the two presidents helps the countries work together effectively.
