Harare city officials have warned staff about misusing WhatsApp groups meant for business updates. Mr. B. Matengarufu, the Human Capital Director, sent a memo to all council workers about his concerns. The November 2024 document points out that some employees have posted harmful messages and false information, which has upset other staff members and the public.
The memo states this behavior breaks the rules in the Government's New Protection of Data Act and the revised Council's Code of Conduct. It says employees can use these platforms but must do this responsibly and legally. Mr. Matengarufu explained that sharing false information that upsets people is a serious offense according to their policies.
The Zimbabwe Municipal Workers' Union disagrees with the city's stance. Simbarashe James Tafirenyika, the ZIMNAWU President, has criticized how management is handling the situation. He claims leaders are being unfair and corrupt. He also shared thoughts in the Shona language about leaders trying to silence staff who speak up about problems.
Mr. Tafirenyika said he opposes what he calls efforts to scare workers into silence. He urged managers to think more clearly about the situation and stressed that workers mainly want fair pay for their efforts. The union leader ended by saying the voice of all workers will eventually overcome decisions he sees as harsh or unjust.
