Jamaica’s trailblazing jurist Ena Collymore-Woodstock dies at 108
Jamaica just lost Ena Collymore-Woodstock at 108, and she was basically the country's first woman to do everything in law. She got orphaned young in Spanish Town, served as a radar operator during World War II in Belgium and Britain, then hit up law school in London, where she was the only woman on the debate team at Gray's Inn before getting called to the British Bar. She came back home and became the first female Court Clerk after initially getting rejected because officials thought women could not handle it, and then she kept stacking firsts as Crown Solicitor and Resident Magistrate. She dragged her three kids around while working circuit courts, ran the Juvenile Courts system when it launched, and kept judging in Turks and Caicos...
Police defend NRM rallies amid bias claims
Police operations boss Frank Mwesigwa jumped in to defend why NRM supporters get to roll through town with processions while opposition crews keep catching teargas and bullets. He said ruling party events get cleared beforehand and run under cop supervision, which is apparently the difference between getting permission versus getting shot at. This whole mess kicked off after people spotted a police truck hauling NRM fans to a Museveni rally in Mbarara, and it came right after violent clashes between security forces and National Unity Platform supporters left one guy dead in Iganga. NUP secretary general David Lewis Rubongoya called out the selective enforcement and said his candidate cannot stop supporters from getting hyped during...
Mukweli cleared in Post Bank SAGE commission case
Stephen Mukweli walked away from all charges after the Anti-Corruption Court ruled prosecutors never proved he did anything criminal when Post Bank paid out over 292 million shillings in commissions during the SAGE project bid. Justice Jane Okuo Kajuga said the evidence showed the bank openly discussed hiring businessman Jude Muhereza Kachoboye as a commission agent through emails and committee meetings, and there was nothing sketchy about the arrangement. The court pointed out that Post Bank actually made over 8 billion shillings from the SAGE program by 2019, which crushed any argument that the commission payment caused financial loss. Kajuga said prosecutors failed to show fraudulent intent or prove the accused conspired to rip off...
Besigye's plea halted over judge bias claims
The High Court put the brakes on Kizza Besigye and Obeid Lutale Kamulegeya entering their pleas after the defense squad filed a constitutional challenge against Justice Emmanuel Baguma. Martha Karua from Kenya rolled up and told the court that her clients think Baguma is biased, and there is already a complaint sitting with the Judicial Service Commission about him. The judge agreed to wait until the Constitutional Court weighs in, and everybody is coming back later this month. Besigye and Lutale got hit with treason charges way back, but still have not entered pleas because the prosecution never handed over the actual evidence bundle. Karua pointed out that her clients cannot plead to charges when they do not even know what specific...
Kagame, Tshisekedi sign historic peace deal in DC
Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo just signed a peace deal in Washington with Trump playing mediator, and President Paul Kagame and President Felix Tshisekedi agreed to dismantle armed groups while pulling Rwandan forces out of Congolese territory. The pact tackles the FDLR rebel situation that has been Kigali's excuse for getting involved in eastern Congo since the mid-90s, and it sets up monitoring systems with regional backup to make sure everyone follows through. Trump said this ends one of the planet's longest conflicts and called both leaders courageous while joking they would spend their time hugging and taking economic advantage of America, as everyone else does. He promised US support for mineral agreements that let...
Uganda to host debut Africa Dragon Boat Cup
Uganda is about to host the first Africa Dragon Boat Cup, and Solomon Muwonge from the Uganda Dragon Boat Federation broke the news during a sitdown with Ambassador Richard Kabonero from the Foreign Affairs Ministry. Ehab Gouda and Mary Lai from the Africa Dragon Boat Federation rolled through to check if the country can actually pull off the event, and they said around 500 athletes from 16 countries will show up to compete while hundreds of fans watch in person and millions stream online. Kabonero said the whole thing is a solid move for Uganda because it lets people flex their skills and puts the country on the map. Lai mentioned Uganda gets to show off its tourism and investment opportunities while everyone is tuned in for the...
Newborn found in a blood trail, rescued by neighbors
Two neighbors in Bulenga spotted a blood trail and followed it until they discovered an abandoned newborn still connected to his placenta. Namaganda Annet and another woman from Kikaaya Zone grabbed the baby and got him to a clinic before handing him over to cops at Bulenga Police Station. Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Rachael Kawala confirmed the whole thing went down in Wakiso District. Authorities moved the kid to a children's home for proper care, and investigators are trying to track down whoever ditched him. Police documented the scene and want anyone with info to come forward.
Uganda oil firms urged to chase regional gigs
Uganda is telling its oil and gas contractors to stop thinking small and start chasing deals across Africa before production ramps up in 2027. Jimmy Mugerwa from the Industry Enhancement Centre said companies need to hustle harder because once the country hits full operations mode, the window for grabbing opportunities is gonna shrink fast. Representatives from Namibia, Kenya, and Tanzania showed up at the National Content Conference in Kampala and basically said Ugandan firms should link up with local partners in their countries. Namibia runs an open licensing system where anyone can apply for acreage, and Tanzania requires foreign companies to team up with local businesses through joint ventures. Some Ugandan contractors are already...
Museveni vows Kasese airport and SGR line
President Museveni told crowds in Kasese that his government will build an international airport there and run a new Standard Gauge Railway line to the western district. The promises came during his campaign stop at Nyakasanga Playground, where he said better transport links would help tourism and cross-border trade. He mentioned the airport would come after the one being built in Hoima for the oil sector. The president talked up ongoing road fixes across western Uganda, pointing to highways like Fort Portal to Kasese and routes feeding into Queen Elizabeth National Park. He said districts only getting around 1 billion shillings a year for road maintenance will get extra equipment to handle their infrastructure. Tourism brings in over...
