Bus flips trying to pass, one dead and ten not okay
Another bad wreck on the Harare-Bulawayo road, this time a bus flipping over. One person died and ten got hurt when a Zhongtong bus crashed near the 21-kilometer marker, with the Zimbabwe Republic Police saying the driver lost control trying to pass another vehicle. The bus, carrying twelve people total, swerved off the road and rolled onto its side. The sole fatality was a passenger who died right there at the scene. Emergency services responded to the crash site. All the injured people were taken for medical treatment. The police statement noted the bus had been heading toward Harare when the overtaking maneuver went wrong, leading to the vehicle ending up on its side off the roadway.
Car flips into the river, two gone, but the driver’s not texting back
Rough morning in Harare after a car took a dive into the Mukuvisi. Two people died early Wednesday when a Toyota Hilux flew off Highglen Road near the Trabanlas Interchange, smacked a billboard, and ended up in the river. The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirmed that the driver and one passenger died on impact. The vehicle had been carrying four people total. The two other passengers got hurt in the crash. Police reported the wreck happened before sunrise. Emergency crews pulled the bodies from the scene and took them to the Sally Mugabe Hospital mortuary for autopsies. An investigation is presumably underway, though the police statement just gave the basic facts of the incident.
Dr Nhunzva summoned over AI drama, ZRP says fake news ain't cute
Yep, the cops are officially coming for the deepfakes. Zimbabwean police, the ZRP, have called in some guy named Dr David Nhunzva. They want him to come down to their CID Law and Order unit to chat about some AI-generated videos. The authorities claim he made and spread this fake content to make the police force look bad. Their official statement says creating or sharing false info online is a crime under something called the Cyber and Data Protection Act. The law they're leaning on apparently covers a lot of digital nonsense. It includes deepfake videos, completely made-up news, and any misleading claims posted on the internet. Using platforms to threaten people or trash an institution's reputation is also included. The police are...
Alpha Media Holdings staff paid $50, call it a Christmas miracle
Alright, let's not pretend this is surprising. A big media company in Zimbabwe, Alpha Media Holdings, has not paid its staff for an entire year. We're talking about the people running NewsDay, The Standard, and a bunch of other outlets like Independent, Southern Eye, and HStv News. The owner is Trevor Ncube. Employees just got a pathetic fifty bucks right before Christmas, which the company apparently called an "advance" for a salary from next month they'll probably never see. Meanwhile, the editors and bosses pocketed a whole hundred dollars themselves. Let that disparity sink in. These journalists and staff are apparently still expected to put out newspapers and run digital platforms, meeting every deadline, while not getting their...
CEO’s office hit with waste, staff blame pay dispute
Someone left a literal pile of human excrement at the office door of Kennias Mafukidze, the head of Alpha Media Holdings. Employees at the media group, which puts out the NewsDay paper among others, found the disturbing package and could not enter the workspace. People inside the company are whispering about two possible reasons: either a very gross form of protest or an attempt at black magic, often called juju. Theories are flying among the staff after the discovery of the biohazard protest. Some think it was a deliberate act targeting management, while others genuinely suspect a ritualistic motive. No one knows who did it or exactly why, but the leading guess points to a furious worker who has not been paid. This nasty situation...
Killer’s hit list leaks, cops scramble in Guruve
Cops in Zimbabwe have flooded Guruve with officers after the suspected serial killer, Anymore Zvitsva, supposedly added two more murders to his tally. The latest victims are a forty-year-old woman, Alice Saujati Mayora, and her teenage daughter, Shalom Malunga, bringing the total number of people he is linked to killing up to twelve since October. A police rep, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed the beefed-up security, which now includes soldiers doing patrols and searches. Authorities are telling folks in the Korobe area to literally sleep in groups for safety. Nyathi acknowledged they have that creepy list of a hundred women and fifty girls Zvitsva might be targeting, which was found pinned to a cart. They are checking if it is...
Cops post wrong pic of killer, locals aren’t buying it
People up in Guruve are calling cap on the police sketch of this alleged serial killer, Anymore Zvitsva. Folks who actually know the guy, also called Modho, say the ZRP mugshot is straight up wrong. They insist the real Zvitsva has a scar on his left cheek and is a bit lighter-skinned. This has everyone side-eyeing the cops, wondering who gave them the bad intel and if they're even chasing the right dude. Adding to the confusion, the man they're looking for is supposedly running around with a busted hand. Locals are questioning how someone with that kind of injury could be pulling off these violent home invasions. His creepy alleged M.O. is targeting widows, with talk of a hit list containing over a hundred names, plus fifty other...
Brother steals wife, court calls it taboo
A wild village drama in Makoni district ended with a guy getting fined cattle for knocking up his brother's wife. Itai Henderson took his relative, Prosper Musarika, to the traditional court of Chief Makoni, demanding eight cows as compensation after allegedly catching Musarika with his wife, Priscilla, in the bushes. Henderson claimed the affair wrecked his marriage, left his wife pregnant, and even forced him to sell his only ox to pay her family a bride price debt after she bounced. The chief ultimately ruled against Musarika, fining him three beasts and court fees. According to Henderson, the whole mess started with village whispers about his wife and Musarika. He says he stumbled upon them getting busy near the Witvlag area. After...
Bus full of Zimbabweans dodges doom, driver not so lucky
A bus full of people from Zimbabwe almost became a statistic in a gnarly pileup near Makhado. The smashup, which happened on the N1 highway by the Witvlag turnoff in Limpopo province, involved an Exo cross-border bus, a tanker truck, and a smaller hatchback car. According to a transport department rep named Matome Taueatsoala, only the bus driver got messed up enough to need a hospital. Everyone else on the bus, which was heading to Gauteng, walked away fine and just caught another ride. The official blamed the wet and foggy weather for turning the road into a slip and slide. Authorities shut the N1 down for a while after the wreck, telling drivers to pump the brakes and be super careful. Taueatsoala said the backup from the crash was...
