6 Tonnes Removed from Councillor Shop amid Food Aid Looting

Workers hauled away six tonnes of maize from George Dzinotizeyi's shop at Zvavahera Business Centre. The removal happened three weeks ago during widespread claims that officials stole Social Welfare food meant for hungry families. Many people reported that the Ward 9 Councillor refused to give food to opposition party members even when their names appeared on official lists.

Local youth Taurai Mawere told reporters that Dzinotizeyi blocked opposition supporters from receiving the aid packages they deserved. The Mirror news team recorded the maize removal on February 12, 2025, after receiving tips from concerned citizens. Sources indicated the grain disappeared shortly after Zanu PF Member of Parliament Winston Chitando visited the shop to investigate complaints.

Dzinotizeyi avoided answering questions about the missing grain. He insisted reporters must visit his office for comments. When asked where to find this office, he admitted not having one but suggested journalists should call him upon entering the area. The truck driver initially admitted the grain belonged to the councilor before speeding away through back roads after learning he spoke with reporters.

The driver eventually stopped at a residence belonging to Tinashe Muranda in Mpandawana. A woman at this location claimed ownership of the maize, saying she hired the councilor as her salesman. She stated she purchased the grain from Tom Zenith Innovations, which imported 34 tonnes from South African supplier Farmwise Grains. When reporters asked whether she recognized the conflict between private sales and public distribution duties, she expressed no concern.

The woman directed further questions to her husband, Tinashe Muranda. He offered a different explanation, claiming he sold the maize for an unnamed friend. According to Muranda, they retrieved the grain from Dzinotizeyi because their other supplies ran out. He insisted the councilor had not managed to sell any bags during this arrangement. Reporters noticed the councilor also stocked fertilizer, beans, and wheat at his shop - identical items to government aid packages.

Public anger continues to grow regarding the theft of welfare supplies intended for struggling villagers. Authorities recently arrested several Zanu PF officials from Bhasera facing similar accusations. These cases highlight ongoing concerns about corruption within food distribution programs during difficult economic times. Rural families depend on these supplies for basic survival as drought conditions worsen across the region.
