Abia takes charge of its own power bills now

The state of Abia now controls its own power grid rules. The national electricity commission gave official approval to the Abia State Electricity Regulatory Authority. This new group, called ASERA, will oversee everything related to power generation and distribution within the state. The chairman, a man named Emeka Onyegbule, made the announcement at the Government House in Umuahia. He said the change starts immediately.

This shift follows a constitutional amendment from a couple of years back that let states manage their own electricity sectors. The national regulator in Abuja issued an interim order allowing states to set up their own governing bodies. Onyegbule stated that ASERA now holds the full mandate for regulation, not the national commission known as NERC. All parts of the electricity chain fall under its direct oversight. This includes handling consumer complaints against power distribution companies.

The Abia State Information Commissioner, Prince Okey Kanu, also spoke. He credited a state law, the Electricity Act of 2025, for making this development possible. He added that ASERA can now give out licenses for metering and billing. This power is meant to pull private investment into the business of installing electricity meters for customers.
