Abuja utility says nonpayment costs Niger N1.6B monthly

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company faces massive financial losses each month from customers who refuse to pay their power bills. Company officials say they lose 1.6 billion naira every month from unpaid electricity charges across Niger State. The power distributor should collect 2.5 billion naira monthly but receives only 850 million naira from customers. Managing Director Chijioke Okwuokenye spoke about these problems during a press meeting with reporters in Minna. He praised the creation of Niger State Electricity Regulatory Commission as a positive step forward.

Chief Business Officer Samuel Odekina explained that several issues cause these revenue problems. Customers steal electricity, many people avoid paying their bills, and communities fight against new power equipment. The company continues working to provide steady electricity despite these obstacles. Workers have installed 1,150 new meters and plan to replace 8,000 more devices. Management also gives money back to customers who paid for meters but never received them.

The electricity company has built new power stations and fixed old equipment throughout the region. Engineers finished a 500 KVA substation in Minna and repaired an 11 KVA transformer in Bida. They also upgraded 500 KVA equipment at Morris and 11 KVA systems at Zarumai areas. Odekina asked all electricity users to pay their bills on time. He said prompt payments help the company serve customers better and maintain reliable power service.
