Accra CBD paralyzed by surprise Kwame Nkrumah Avenue shutdown

City officials slam the brakes on a major stretch of Kwame Nkrumah Avenue after dangerous potholes turn the busy road into a hazard zone. The Accra Metropolitan Assembly plans to shut down the critical route from 8pm Saturday until midnight Sunday for emergency fixes. Gilbert Nii Ankrah from the public affairs office confirms the four-hour blackout will hit the U-turn at Lava plus the area between Derby Avenue and Selwyn Market Street. Drivers face a nightmare weekend as the closure blocks key intersections right through the Central Business District. Traffic cops will swarm the area to direct frustrated motorists around the construction zone.

Road inspectors discovered massive depressions and crater-sized holes that have been wrecking vehicles and endangering pedestrians for weeks. Complaints from angry drivers finally forced the assembly to take action on the deteriorating pavement. Chief Executive Michael Kpakpo Allotey authorizes the weekend shutdown after safety concerns reach a breaking point. Workers will tackle the worst sections first before laying fresh asphalt to strengthen the entire surface. The assembly promises clear signs and alternative routes to help drivers navigate around the mess.

Officials admit the timing stinks but insist the repairs cannot wait any longer. The assembly begs residents to stay patient while crews race against the clock to fix the damage. City bosses hope the weekend work will prevent bigger headaches down the road.
