Adams files case to bury lying top cop Mkhwanazi

National Coloured Congress MP Fadiel Adams filed perjury charges on Monday against KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi at Cape Town Central Police Station. The charges follow Mkhwanazi's testimony before the Madlanga Commission, where he accused former Police Minister Bheki Cele of corrupt financial dealings with a tenderpreneur, only to withdraw the claims via text message days later. Adams argues that retracting sworn parliamentary testimony through SMS fails to meet legal standards for accountability.

Mkhwanazi testified on Sept. 8 that Cele sent a bank account number to Vusimuzi Matlala, who then deposited funds into that account. The commissioner later admitted on October 23 that his team had used incorrect banking details and apologized for any harm caused. Cele denied wrongdoing on Oct. 24, calling the accusations shocking while acknowledging Mkhwanazi's anti-crime work in the province.

Adams maintains that the case addresses public trust rather than personal grievances. The MP stated that parliamentary proceedings demand higher standards than informal message retractions can provide. Western Cape police confirmed receiving the complaint, while KZN authorities declined comment by press time.
