Adegoke Onaopemipo targets Olympic debut for Nigeria

Nigerian squash player Adegoke Onaopemipo attributes much of his competitive success to maintaining a positive demeanor during matches rather than dwelling on previous points. The 25-year-old athlete, currently ranked 137th globally and holding the top national position, initially resisted trying the sport before discovering his talent after reaching the semifinals in his debut tournament.

Onaopemipo secured his first national championship at age 19 and has since claimed victories at three PSA Squash Tour events while competing without coaching support. The Lagos native develops multiple strategic approaches for matches since he lacks sideline guidance to adjust tactics mid-competition. Financial constraints remain significant as Nigerian athletes receive minimal government backing and depend on community sponsors.

Representing his country alone at The World Games 2025 in Chengdu marked a significant milestone for Onaopemipo, who advanced to the plate final after winning three consecutive matches. The inclusion of squash at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics has intensified his professional commitment as he pursues becoming the first Nigerian Olympic squash competitor.
