Adong rises from the dust to build an empire

A Soroti businesswoman secured 300 million shillings from Equity Bank to launch a construction firm that builds facilities at national parks and produces toilet paper for regional markets. Winfred Phiona Adong attended a bank stakeholder meeting on Tuesday, where she explained how the financing helped her start Ayoma Manufacturing Company after leaving corporate sales three years earlier. The firm completed restroom construction at Queen Elizabeth National Park in September and staff housing at Mount Elgon National Park before expanding into paper goods production.

Equity Bank provided contract financing worth 330,000 dollars to help Adong purchase raw materials and scale operations across eastern and northern Uganda. Executive Director Claver Serumaga said the bank tracks customer progress and offers business training as companies expand their operations. Adong employs single mothers as casual workers and distributes products to Lira, Gulu, Mbale, and Jinja with plans to enter Kampala markets. She asked the government to grant tax breaks to local manufacturers seeking growth opportunities.
