The Ministry of Agriculture has announced new minimum farm-gate prices for key crops in the 2024/2025 season. Maize prices jumped from K650 to K1050 per kilogram, marking a significant increase for farmers.
Engineer Geoffrey Mamba, the principal secretary for irrigation, shared the updated pricing for various agricultural commodities. Farmers can expect K1200 per kilogram for rice paddy, K900 for sorghum, K2500 for soya beans, and K1500 for pure and mixed beans. Shelled groundnuts will fetch K2000 per kilogram.
The ministry has instructed agro-dealers and processors to purchase crops at or above these minimum prices. Businesses looking to buy agricultural produce can obtain licenses from Agricultural Development Divisions and crop development offices located near the Natural Resources College in Lilongwe.
These new prices aim to support farmers by ensuring fair compensation for their agricultural products. The substantial increase in maize prices could provide farmers with better economic opportunities and encourage continued agricultural production.
