Agu rots in jail as judges flee to party

The planned arraignment of Owerri lawyer and activist Chinedu Agu on cyberstalking allegations against Governor Hope Uzodimma stalled when no chief magistrate was available at the Owerri Magistrates Court. Officers from the Inspector General of Police X Squad arrested Agu after a petition by the Imo Democratic Alliance that accused him of inciting and defamatory writings. The state police spokesman stated that the case alleges cyberstalking, defamation, incitement of civil disturbance, and conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace while affirming respect for his rights. With magistrates at an official function, lawyers waited for hours before learning proceedings would not hold, and police returned Agu to custody as bar leaders appeared in solidarity. Through counsel, Agu alleged political motives and questioned the petitioning group, while the hearing shifted to Thursday September 25 2025 amid comparisons to the recent detention of journalist Hassan Mai Waya Kangiwa in Kebbi State.
