Agyepong in hot water for divisive remarks

Former Assin Central lawmaker Kennedy Agyepong faces harsh criticism after what he said when meeting lawyers in Kumasi. Reports claim he told the group that voters turned down Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party's presidential candidate, because he practices Islam and comes from a smaller tribal group. These comments angered many NPP members, who shared their frustration through social media platforms.

Several party supporters blasted Agyepong for making statements that could split the NPP just as they started rebuilding after election losses. They pointed out that he talked this way during the party's leadership race back in 2023. These critics made clear they wouldn't accept such behavior again from him. One worried party supporter declared that the entire organization matters more than what any single person wants.

Agyepong has announced that he plans to compete for the NPP leadership position again despite this backlash. His latest statements worried many about keeping the party together going forward. Numerous members asked everyone involved with the NPP to focus on sticking together instead of making divisive comments as they look toward future elections.

The controversy highlights growing tensions inside Ghana's political landscape as parties reposition themselves. Agyepong's statements touch on sensitive religious and ethnic issues rarely discussed openly in Ghanaian politics. His willingness to mention these topics directly has created both strong supporters and fierce opponents within his party ranks.
