Aliyev thanks Putin for update on investigation into deadly Azerbaijan Airlines crash

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin for updating him on the investigation into the deadly 2024 crash of an Azerbaijan Airlines plane bound for Russia. Aliyev expressed confidence that the investigation would be impartial and thorough.

Speaking ahead of bilateral talks in Tajikistan on Thursday, Aliyev described Russia as a friendly nation, signaling a potential improvement in relations that had been strained following the crash. He expressed gratitude for the information provided about the incident, noting the ongoing communication between officials of both nations.

Putin informed Aliyev that Ukrainian drones were responsible for the crash, with one still airborne when the Azerbaijan Airlines flight 8243 was struck. He stated that the plane was likely hit by debris from a missile that self-destructed in the air. The crash, which occurred near Grozny, Russia, killed 38 people and injured 29 others.

Although relations had soured after the incident, with Azerbaijan considering a lawsuit against Russia, Putin reaffirmed that Russia would fulfill its compensation obligations to the victims' families and conduct a legal assessment of the actions involved.
