Alport Ports Shake Up Gambian Trade with Bold Upgrades

A big company from Turkey called Albayrak has joined the Gambia Ports Authority. Together, they started a new company named Alport. They started improving the port in Banjul.

Albayrak promised to spend a lot of money to make the port bigger and better. They will also build a brand new port in Sanyang. These changes will help ships move faster through the port and carry more stuff.

On Saturday, the company showed some people from newspapers around the work area. The new port manager, Mr Cem Öztürk, talked about their plans. His company won a special contest in 2023 to work on the port. They already started making more space by flattening the ground near the Muslim High School and the Half-Die area.

Mr Öztürk said they will bring new computers in six months. These computers will change everything at the port. They will also bring special machines to help load and unload ships in just two months. The port already works better than before. Instead of eight ships, they can handle eleven ships at once.

Alport works well with other important groups in Gambia, like the Revenue Authority and Maritime Agency. Some people were worried about the new company, but Mr Öztürk explained that everyone benefits from these changes. Even though his company owns most of Alport, Gambia will make more money from the better port.

The port workers kept their jobs and would receive the same pay and benefits as before. Mr Öztürk thinks they might need even more workers soon. He said they might grow from one thousand to two thousand workers. He talked about another port his company fixed in Conakry, where they needed many more workers as the port grew bigger.
