Amakhosi's tribute to Tickeys stirs storm

The 2006 passing of Mackay Tickeys triggered both widespread mourning and internal turmoil at Bulawayo's Amakhosi Cultural Centre following a controversial obituary statement. The actor had recently returned from America after performing in Workshop Negative when he died, prompting director Cont Mhlanga to release remarks suggesting Tickeys squandered his success through drinking and relationships. The commentary sparked outrage among colleagues and resulted in legal action to restrict some personnel from the venue.

Tickeys gained national recognition portraying Sakhamuzi in the groundbreaking television production Sinjalo, which explored relations between ChiShona and IsiNdebele speakers through comedy and drama alongside Fortune Ruzungude. Theatre practitioner Raisedon Baya and actor Memory Kumbota described him as an inspirational figure from Makokoba who remained humble despite achieving multiple accolades. Mhlanga later acknowledged Tickeys among Amakhosi's five greatest contributors, praising his ability to mobilize resources and connect with influential figures during international tours.
