The African National Congress Youth League rejected a Democratic Alliance attempt to remove Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi through a confidence vote on Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2025. Provincial Secretary Mpume Sangweni accused opposition members of using a Public Protector investigation into crime prevention wardens as a pretext for removing a black leader. The report found administrators spent over 1.2 billion rand establishing the program without constitutional authority.
Youth league representatives pledged to block the measure in legislative chambers and public demonstrations. The Public Protector ordered officials to reassign wardens as traffic officers within 180 days after determining the program violated national police jurisdiction. Democratic Alliance leader Solly Msimanga cited budget waste as justification for the motion.
Economic Freedom Fighters and ActionSA members indicated they would not support the measure. The youth organization credited Lesufi with reducing crime by 7.9 percent and creating more than 8,200 positions for young workers. Coalition tensions persist as the ANC governs without a majority in the province.
