Morero shrugs off fresh bid to oust him

Johannesburg Executive Mayor Dada Morero faces another motion of no confidence after minority parties in the ANC-led coalition filed a bid on Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2025. The United Democratic Movement, African Transformation Movement, and Al Jama-ah accuse him of weak service delivery. Morero said the move is routine politics and said partners can air grievances in council. He took office in October 2024 after Kabelo Gwamanda stepped down and has survived several similar votes.

The push exposes strains in a coalition that has struggled to fix bad roads, water cuts, and trash backlogs in a city of about six million. The Minority Governing Parties bloc says the city is in administrative freefall and alleges Morero has ignored council decisions. The ANC calls the effort a power grab. The Democratic Alliance urged parties to support the motion, while the Johannesburg Progressive Caucus, which has the Patriotic Alliance, backed Morero. The Pan Africanist Congress said its support is independent. Morero cited a recent Times Media poll as evidence of public backing and said voters will judge his record.
