Anti-Discrimination Student Movement Resumes with Mass Protests Across Bangladesh

Students kicked off the final part of their big protest movement on July first. The Anti-Discrimination Student Movement had taken a break for the Eid holiday but came back stronger. They started their fight against the government decision about job quotas back on June ninth. The protesters gave officials until June thirtieth to fix their demands. Most colleges were closing for vacation anyway.

Students gathered at the Raju Sculpture at Dhaka University that morning. Nahid Islam spoke for the group and announced their four main demands. He told everyone about the next steps they would take. The plan included a huge march from the main library the next day. Students from every university and college across the country would do the same thing at their schools.

Universities everywhere joined the cause that day. Jahangirnagar University students marched and blocked a major highway for ten minutes. They warned they would shut down the road forever if the quota system stayed. Chittagong University students made a human chain despite heavy rain. Rajshahi and Barishal Universities also held protests and human chains.

The student leaders had spent their vacation planning better. They formed special teams to reach students at different schools. Abu Baker Mazumder and Abdul Hannan Masud handled communications with university students. Other team members contacted students at district colleges. The protesters felt more confident and organized compared to their earlier attempts.

Students had renamed their movement during a late-night meeting on June thirtieth. They changed from their Facebook page name to Students Against Discrimination to include more people. The organizers visited every dormitory to make sure enough students would participate. They knew teachers were already protesting about pension changes.
